Update on the Global Economic Situation
I have just finished visiting sauna factories and trade shows in Asia and here is what most sauna
mfg are doing this year. Because of the slowdown in the global economy almost all factories are
looking for ways to cut their costs. But unfortunately, they are also cutting quality. Some sauna
mfg are using cheaper wood and covering it with leatherette, cloth, and canvas, and others are
using veneers, plywood, and panelboard. Most are making everything thinner; the wood, the
doors, the framework, etc. Some are also using more glass because glass is cheaper than wood.
WE DO NOT AND NEVER WILL DO THIS. In fact, we are the only Solid Wood Manufacturer left in
our price range. A sauna is not something you want to buy every couple years, so we have kept
our quality the same and have reduced our profit both at the factory level and in Canada to ride
out this downturn. We have done this because we want to maintain our high standard of
workmanship and feel the future benefits will be worth it. Cheap saunas are exactly that, cheaply
made saunas and that's not the way we manufacture ours.
Our factory specializes in high end furniture which they have been doing for 19 years and which
is 75% of their business. Their market is primarily in Asia and Europe where they demand quality.
Therefore, not only are they very good at manufacturing saunas, but they do not depend on
saunas for an income. Therefore, they will be around for many years to come, but some mfg that
only make saunas may not be able to stay in business much longer unless the economy
improves quite soon. Some have already closed. So if you buy one of their saunas, what will you
do for parts or warranty when the company is no longer in business?
